The Las Cruces Fire Department’s Hazardous Materials Team responded to a propane leak in the North Sonoma Ranch area Tuesday evening.
The first arriving firefighters on the 4600 block of N. Sonoma Ranch Boulevard discovered a leaking 20-pound propane cylinder inside a gas station storage locker just after 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 12, 2026.
Firefighters isolated the cylinder and relocated it to a remote area of the parking lot to reduce the hazard while the Hazmat Team responded to the scene. The Hazmat Team conducted a controlled flaring procedure, allowing the propane to safely burn off until the cylinder was fully emptied. The operation was completed in approximately one hour. No injuries were reported. The Las Cruces Fire Department reminds the public to immediately report any suspected gas leaks or hazardous materials incidents by calling 911.
